Daltile Granite Creates Bold Backdrop for Veterans Memorial
The Las Vegas Veterans Memorial, set to be completed in May 2016, has begun construction with an official groundbreaking that took place November 11 – Veterans Day.
The memorial will feature 18 statues representing 200 years of American conflict, surrounding three bronze central statues that represent post-9/11 military and the families of those who have served and are currently serving. The statues will be highlighted by a bold backdrop of black granite slabs supplied by Daltile. The slabs will feature inscriptions that honor the dedication and sacrifice that is as strong and permanent as the stone itself.
Artist, Douwe Blumberg, was commissioned to create the statues in aluminum magnesium alloy and bronze. Scott Tiano explains, “The statues in aluminum alloy are sculpted in less detail to give a sense of the past with an almost ghostly look.”
The stoic soldiers (and other figures who served during wartime) that gaze toward the center of the monument, provide a sharp contrast to the bronze statues that form the centerpiece.
The bronze statue in the center of the memorial displays post-9/11 military in sharp detail. Looking on is another bronze statue that represents the families of those serving today and the families of those who have served throughout history.
