New Ravenna Introduces 3 One-of-a-Kind Mosaics With Reverie
New Ravenna is pleased to introduce Reverie, a collection of three one-of-a-kind mosaics that celebrate the natural world. The hand-crafted mosaics have been created in glass for vertical installations. Each custom mosaic exemplifies New Ravenna’s distinct ability to interpret ideas into brilliant tapestries of durable imagery.
Midnight Floral was inspired by Dutch still life painting of the 17th century. The deep Obsidian black glass background with its absence of light allows the floral elements to appear illuminated. Each leaf and flower was collected locally, dried, and photographed to achieve photorealism in the mosaic.
Daybreak was inspired by the glowing skies in the stained glass masterpieces of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The luminosity and gracious movement of the Tiffany glass was created using the mosaic techniques of subtle color blending and andamento.
Canopy is a study in chiaroscuro. A fiscus elastica was photographed to create an abstract interpretation of the familiar house plant. The plant was back lit to create shadows with the leaves. By eliminating all color, the focus of the mosaic is on the interplay between positive and negative shapes created by the structure of the plant.
Meredith Heron, principle of her eponymous interior design firm, describes her love of custom mosaics. “Design is always about telling an intricate, dynamic and very personal story about our clients, their loves, life and own distinct touch points. Mosaics are like pieces of art that then get woven into this elaborate discourse. Sometimes they are the anchor, other times they are a highlight. I love natural stone. I’m passionate about using that exclusively in most projects. Glass mosaics are another love because they often play up my love of ombrè and have a wonderful sheen aspect that really adds to the look and feel of our work. We often look to mix metals into our mosaics too or add metal borders in as well to elevate the overall design.”
Further, “Any time you have the opportunity to embed something into a home that is unique to that homeowner and the home itself, you’re adding a rich layer to an ongoing story. When it has been handcrafted with this person in mind, it becomes part of the Lore of the house itself. It changes how the client feels about themselves and the place they call home. It deepens the relationship.”
