Tile of Spain

Tile of Spain, the international brand representing 125 tile manufacturers belonging to the Spanish Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association (ASCER), recently exhibited their latest on-trend designs and collections at CERSAIE 2015 in Bologna, Italy, one of the most important international fairs in the ceramic tile industry.

Minimalist and retro styles continue to be two of the biggest tile trends for next year, along with ceramic tiles inspired by wood tones. New formats are one of the trends Spanish manufacturers are relying on, especially hexagonal shapes, which can be matched with more traditional format tiles. Color palettes are softened or subdued in hues of grey and earthy tones, as well as hues of blue, green and white which can be intensified to create deep color tones.

Gold comes into the picture and take center stage as accent pieces. The beauty and finesse of gold also appears in relief pieces, which are subtle and almost non-existent, mimicking the chromatic hues of the floor and wall tiles.

Each year, Tile of Spain explores the novelties at CERSAIE in order to discover the main creative ceramic trends presented at the show. In 2015 Naturals, Framed, Tempus Fugit (Time Flies), Free Disposition and Sensory Memory were main themes. Here’s a closer look.

Naturals: Planks versus Hexagons

This style highlights nature through veins, refined and simple textures, earth tones, and stressed finishes to replicate the passing of time. Ceramic tiles are presented with an unfinished look, with subtle finishes or natural varnishes to result in an appearance of authenticity. These products may be installed as continuous wood planks, or explored through geometry by using hexagonal pieces.

Framed: Retro vs. Minimal

Vintage designs and Spanish ceramic tiles are a natural fit. The latest designs show styles with lots of prints, especially in floor tiles, recalling traditional motifs. This “crazy for vintage” trend goes further than just mere design.  Ceramic manufacturers have worked hard to create new lines using very classical motifs, making them 100% contemporary. The usual formats, square tiles or metro style tiles, have been treated to reproduce a handmade look. The search for simplicity is complemented by the use of basic and soft colors such as whites, blues, greens, greys and the use of enamel as a weapon to seduce.

Tempus Fugit (Time Flies): Classic vs. Contemporary

Tempus fugit is a trend that makes time the focal point of the project and can be worked into different lines to match the personality and taste of the client. Ceramic floor and wall tiles become the key material to recreate this style by taking advantage of their complete decorative asset. These ceramic floor and wall tiles are both sober and elegant, generally in black and white and installed in perfect symmetry.

Various formats can be used to make walls and floors more sophisticated. Plain octagonal pieces with contrasting inserts are complemented with smaller, more baroque trims, friezes and cornices. Against this classic design, and with the same refined touch, are contemporary, more geometric lines in earth or blue tones with glossy, yet delicate, finishes. The rhythm is set by combining pieces randomly, calling attention to sober white walls.

Free disposition: Straight Lines vs. Angles

Ceramic floor and wall tile collections inspired by rocks and minerals are still very popular for this upcoming year. These are very elaborate pieces capable of offering decorative solutions to the most demanding of spaces. These pieces typically come in large formats and neutral hues such as greys, beiges and creams, which blend with the space to bring the best decorative elements. Extremes are highlighted by tiles in contrasting sheens – either very dull or ultra glossy. In a classic installation, large squares will offer balance and harmony, while a zig-zag pattern that combines different color tones will give rooms a rhythmic and dynamic ambiance.

Sensory Memory: Divine Engravings vs. Flower Accents

The newest ceramic tile collections from Spain are designed to find solutions for the most demanding of aesthetic designs. The finish, form, shape, color and texture of each decorated piece turns it into a sensory memory to make each room special. It could be a subtle engraving on the tiles, or a shallow relief in the same color of the series, giving a touch of purity and moderation to the space. Or it could even be a delicate flower motif; or a gold touch to give a jewel-like look. Adding these little details to installation projects affords elegance and sophistication to the space.
